The Inaugural Louise Bennett-Coverley Festival staged October 15, 2022, was the first of its kind in Jamaica. Canada and parts of the United States, specifically Florida, have an annual Miss Lou festival. Since the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley hails from our shores, it is quite appropriate that Jamaica should have its own festival celebrating the legacy of the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley.
Since the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley is being considered as worthy of the nation’s highest honour – being considered for national heroine award – and given her contribution to the promotion of the Jamaican nation language, folklore, theatre such as Pantomime, storytelling and other significant cultural elements, a festival that pays homage to her formidable contribution is well over-due to become annualized. This festival promotes the literary and cultural dynamics that adds to brand Jamaica.
To ensure that the promotion/teaching and performing of Louise Bennett-Coverley’s work is perpetuated in and throughout Jamaica and the Diaspora at both the tertiary and school-age levels.
To encourage more study and scholarship on Louise Bennett-Coverley’s work.
To encourage Jamaicans to actively preserve and respect our cultural heritage through language, storytelling and folklore.
To showcase/share our rich culture with the world.
